Bio:
Growing up:
Kirk grew up in Carpinteria, California, where he was home-schooled for several years. He loved old books, Lego, Basic programming, and climbing trees. Kirk dropped out of High School during his Sophomore year so he could surf and work at Giovanni’s pizza.
Moving to the San Fernando Valley in his late teen years, Kirk attended Pierce Community College, majoring in math then Spanish then music. Finally, after realizing he liked writing poetry, Kirk focused on English.
Career:
After working as a waiter and bartender for over 25 years, Kirk completed his English degree and became a community college writing instructor. He’s currently an Assistant Professor at Los Angeles City College. He has written book reviews for The Colorado Review and about music and film for No Ripcord. His work has been recognized by the Academy of American Poets, the New Short Fiction Series, and his book of short stories was a semi-finalist in Ohio State’s The Journal Book Prize.
Currently:
Kirk is currently an MFA candidate at the Bennington Writing Seminars in Vermont. He is working on two novels, one about a bartender and the other about a waiter.
